Tuesday’s How Things Work conference at Bronx Community College combined two of our favorite things: using interactive technology to reveal the hidden connections in our urban ecosystem, and getting to talk about science with students! This event brought together 6-12th grade students and a host of expert exhibitors all sharing how the interconnecting parts of New York City work to sustain us.

Although we made WaterWays for a younger audience, it’s rare that adults are familiar with combined sewer overflows and the problems they cause. Jessica and Corinne showcased the Water’s Journey activity, describing how water gets to our homes in cities, and what happens to it after we’ve used it. We were also able to show where the nearest CSO outfalls are on NYC OpenData’s map. We loved hearing from students that the language was really clear, and they learned there are ways to reduce the negative impacts of CSOs like not showering while it’s raining. We also heard about the rain garden initiatives happening nearby!

Thanks, Bronx Community College, James Baldwin Outdoor Learning Center, and Environmental Education Advisory Council of New York City for having us!
