Attending Climate Week NYC!
Climate Week NYC brings over 600 events to the City each year, bringing people together around urgent issues. Killer Snails attended the Educating for Climate Action Summit at the Smithsonian’s National Museum of the American Indian in New York City among other events this week!
This event offered valuable perspectives on the power of connecting people with nature and their communities as part of science curricula for youth. At the Smithsonian, Tecumseh Ceaser’s keynote presentation set the tone, encouraging the audiences to reflect on the indigenous relationship with land, urging us to rethink our connection with nature, and what it means to work with mother earth. The intergenerational panel reinforces this sentiment, emphasizing the importance of climate storytelling in education, or understanding and emphasizing the human connection to the larger issue of climate change.
The sessions offered research-based tools and resources for climate education and showcased best practices from NYC educators. These included incorporating hands-on experiences like green roof projects, and highlighting community action in the curriculum. From collecting air quality data to exploring the links between climate change, public health, and social justice, educators can inspire students to engage with their communities and take meaningful actions.
As a designer of science curriculum supplements, Killer Snails is committed to creating innovative, engaging learning experiences that empower educators to foster foundational interest and knowledge in young students, preparing them to become the next generation of climate action leaders.
