What happens to the water when you turn on the faucet? In Water's Journey, students view the anchoring phenomenon of plastic waste on the shoreline. They learn about how water gets to peoples’ homes, and what happens after it goes down the drain. Using solutions like preventing littering, adding green spaces to soak up rainwater, and conserving water, they reduce the negative impacts of combined sewer overflows, or CSOs, in Chimhe City.

WaterWays was developed in collaboration with the Wildlife Conservation Society, Hudson River Park and Mount Sinai's Transdisciplinary Center for Early Environmental Exposure, with funding support from the National Institutes of Health.

Water's Journey contains:

  • A personalized digital science journal and an augmented reality experience where students examine a water outfall (accessible by phone or browser using webVR)
  •  40 minutes of interactive activities where students are scientists engaged with water science and water stewardship

Teacher Testimonials:

  • “The students really enjoyed the real life scenarios. They were able to engage with it in such a level that it meant something to them, and I think that’s when they grew the most from it.”
  • “WaterWays itself was amazing. The whole program was great. I would like to see it expanded in more different skills or standards!”
  • “Students could manipulate variables and see the instant change, which helped them understand. The simulations were really helpful.”
